Since their creation in 1921, when Hermann Rorschach came up with the idea of using ambiguous designs to test the personality traits of an individual, inkblots have been widely used by psychology practitioners.

Well we thought it was time to examine the creepy insides of the home haunter and other fans of Halloween fun with our very own set of scary inkblot images.

Here‘s one haunt scene that we had tons of fun with. We have used this werewolf figure before, decorating for other Halloween parties but new for this season we gave him his own haunted library / study room.

When we 1st came up with the idea for this display it was supposed to be interactive with the TOTs but of course the calendar slipped away on us. When October 31s arrived, this room in our home haunt was only filled with static props.

But that doesn’t mean it was a cake walk for the guests who came through our haunt – just as they were leaving this sinister study, full of decorating details, they had to walk past a tear away wall scare tactic. We got a lot of good Halloween screams with that one!

This is the werewolf mask we used, some latex wolf hands and his werewolf feet.

You can see from the middle picture, which shows the side shot of the Wolfman, that the point of view is almost in line with the wall – this is because the photo was taken from within the secret room with the tear away wall. The unsuspecting victim had to walk right past the scare actor with a scary Halloween mask!

As mentioned earlier, this room was full of spooky haunted decorations and most folks walking thru our Halloween haunt enjoy the attention to details. Here are some pictures showing some of the spooky details…

You can see from most of our Halloween pictures that we use Scene Setters to begin decorating the rooms in our haunt. What makes these vinyl rolls and panels such a great decoration is that most of them have high calibre imagery on them (certainly far better than we could ever do!) and when used in a small room they can add the illusion of more size or more spooky props than you could ever fit into the room.

Above, you can see the wall with the haunted bookshelf scene behind old dusty books and creepy skull prop is a good example of this idea.

Below, you can see how a scene setter of a scary haunted fireplace used in the corner finished off our werewolf‘s study. At the bottom of the fireplace, behind the plastic, we put a twinkling red, yellow & blue LED light.

It appeared that the image of the fire was twinkling. That worked out really well and every trick-or-treater that came through commented on the amazing detail in our haunt decorations and props.

Another prop idea that had to be trimmed off our list in Halloween 2009 was that we wanted our werewolf prop in our home haunt to be able to turn his head from side to side and speak interactively with the TOTs

We were going to have a scare actor behind the wall where he would be able to see and hear the Tricker-o-Treaters on Halloween night. From this secret hiding spot he would talk to and respond to comments through a plastic tube that would run from the wolf man’s mask back to the actor.

One of the neat things about using this haunting idea is that the pipe changes a person‘s voice and the haunter can play with many different scary voices!

Movement was to be simple puppetry with sticks in the arms coming out thru the elbows to where the actor could control them.

The setup was to revolve around the fact the werewolf was going to missing an eye and he would ask the kids if they had seen his missing eye. Of course it would be in the mouth of a Raven on the bookshelf

The whole scene was meant to be a whimsical Homage to Edgar Allan Poe‘s, “The Raven“

Most every Halloween fan is familiar with Jason Voorhees from the movie Friday the 13th which was first released in 1980. This horror film and its machete wielding lunatic still stands as one of the most iconic images in fright and Halloween haunt scares 30 years later!

But why choose the name Friday the 13th? Why not “Camp Crystal” or “Machete Mayhem” or anything else for that matter…

Because superstitiously the 13th day of the month is burnt into to our collective psyche as a day of ill will and bad luck – But why is that?

The fear of Friday the 13th is supposedly named Frigg triskaidekaphobia. Try and say that 13 times really fast, and no I’m not just making words up again… it is a documented phobia!

Some folks believe this fear of the 13th day landing of the 6th day of the week is a mix of two much older superstitions.

• 1) Thirteen is an unlucky number…
• 2) Friday is an unlucky day…

But Why Fear The Friday or The 13?

It has been suggested that 12 is the perfect number because there are 12 months in the year, 12 zodiac signs, 12 hrs on the faced of a clock, 12 apostles, 12 Olympic Gods and so on. So it is reasoned that to surpass the number twelve and hit the number thirteen must be very bad indeed!

And then there is Friday. Christian beliefs are that Jesus was put to death on Friday (very bad (resurrection good)) and that there were 13 people taking part in the last supper. Also the 14th century, “The Canterbury Tales” labelled this day unlucky and who can dismiss Black Friday and its associations with bad luck and disasters.

Looking a little farther into the other ancient myths and superstitions, there is a Norse myth that says Friday was named for a spirited goddess called Frigga and when the Norse tribes where converted from their old pagan ways Frigga was branded a witch and banished. So the superstition goes that on every Friday, out of spite, she would gather with the devil and 11 more witches (13) to plan evil tricks of fate as pay back for her banishment.

– The 13th day of a month will fall on a Friday if the month begins with Sunday.

– There is at least one Friday the thirteen every year of the calendar.

– There can be up to three Friday the 13th in a calendar year.

– The 13th day of a given month has more chance of being a Friday than the other days.

– On average you can expect the thirteen day of the month to be Friday every 212.35 days.

– The last October Friday the 13th happened in 2006.

– The next October Friday the 13th happens in 2017.

– Black Sabbath released their debut album on Friday Feb. 13th, 1970.

– 19th century Daredevil, Sam Patch performed a 125-foot jump into the Genesse River on Friday, Nov. 13, 1829 – He did not survive. (What was he thinking)

– Four of the 12 Friday the 13th movies were released on the thirteenth day of the month.

– The 13th sequel of this iconic horror film is scheduled to be released on Friday Sept. 13th 2013. (I think that‘s a Trifecta!)

We have done this over and over again and built, in our opinion, realistic looking haunt props and the ideas for decorating this way are only limited by the number of scary masks or latex heads that can be found at your local Halloween store or online.

Here are a couple examples of the cool full size Halloween creatures we have been able to make using this prop building technique;

The Vampire

We made a classic female vampire prop in less than 2hr. She was pretty frightening and we believe the reason she turned out so well is because we started her build with believable Halloween head and hand props.

The Zombies

Most full size static props can be made quickly when you start with a scary looking Halloween mask or head and these zombies were no different.

The standing zombie prop we made in under 30 minutes. Not that making Halloween decorations and props needs to be a race and in fact projects generally turn out best if you take your time but sometimes when you’re running short on haunting time it’s nice to be able to build an awesome looking monster prop quickly
